Adjusting Quiz Deadlines for Individual Students

The 'User override' feature allows you to adjust quiz deadlines for individual students. As you adjust quiz deadlines for individual students, please keep in mind that once the end date and time of a quiz has elapsed, all active quiz attempts will automatically close, even if students' time limits are not yet up. With this in mind, we recommend avoiding extremely narrow test-taking windows, to ensure students receive adequate time to complete their attempts.

To adjust quiz deadlines for individual students:

  1. From your course home page, click on the desired quiz.
  2. On your Administration block (typically located on the top left of your screen), click 'User overrides.'
  3. Click 'Add user override.' Please note, when the override screen appears, the 'Search' and 'Require password' fields occasionally auto-fill with your username and password. Make sure to delete these entries before proceeding.
  4. In the search box, enter the name of the student who requires a user override.
  5. Adjust this individual's deadline by modifying the 'Open the quiz' and 'Close the quiz' dates as necessary.
  6. If necessary, adjust the time limit and attempts allowed as needed. Each student has one attempt to begin with. To allow for a second attempt, you will need to select '2' from the 'Attempts allowed' dropdown menu.
  7. Once your changes are complete, click 'Save.'

Please note, if an overridden grade has been entered for this student's quiz, it must be removed before they can reattempt it. Otherwise, the gradebook will continue to display the locked overridden grade.

NOTE: You can also use the 'Set Multiple User Overrides' feature to easily modify quiz settings—such as quiz deadlines, time limits, and/or attempts allowed—for multiple quizzes for a single student at one time.

To adjust an existing user override:

  1. From your course home page, click on the desired quiz.
  2. On your Administration block, click 'User overrides.'
  3. To the right of the student's name, click the cogwheel icon to edit the existing override.
  4. Adjust the open/close dates as necessary.
  5. To save your changes, click 'Save.'
