Grading Written Assignments from the Assignment Page
- Access the assignment you would like to grade from your course home page.
- Select ‘Grade’ to begin grading. This will open the grading window for this assignment (for more information on the grading window, please see here). Submission statuses (i.e., no attempt, submitted for grading, draft status) listed in the ‘Submission’ pane will help you determine whether a student’s submission needs to be graded. Note: if a student has left their submission in draft status, you may submit the assignment for grading.
If the first displayed student has no attempt, you can:- Click the orange filter icon (top-right) to filter using the following filter options: Submitted, Not submitted, Requires grading, Granted extension.
- Use the 'Change user' dropdown to select a student whose submission needs grading (as noted with a red asterisk).
- Once you've selected a student whose submission needs grading, the left-hand pane of the grading screen will display their online text and/or uploaded files. Use the navigational arrows on the top left-side to page through the online text or uploaded file text for this student. (Online text and uploaded files can also be accessed from the right-hand panel.)
- Use the marking tools to annotate, enter comments directly on the submission, or highlight portions of the submission. (For more information on marking tools, please see here.)
- Enter a grade in the ‘Grade out of 100’ field.
- Enter any general comments in the ‘Feedback comments’ field. (To reset the 'Feedback comments' and 'Grade out of 100' fields and enter new text, simply click 'Reset' from the bottom of the page.)
- To allow this student another attempt, select 'Yes' from the 'Attempt settings' pane (bottom right).
- Once you have saved your changes, you can:
- Use the 'Return to Gradebook' link (top-right corner) to return to this student's User report/gradebook.
- Click the assignment or class title links (far-left corner) to return to the assignment or course homepage.
- Use the 'Change user' dropdown to select another student whose submission needs grading (as noted with a red asterisk).

You may also enter the grading screen from the assignment's submissions table with the following steps:
- Access the assignment you would like to grade from your course home page.
- Click 'View all submissions.' This will load the assignment's submissions table, which displays:
- a list of all students who have submitted the assignment
- a summary of submission details (such as the date and time of submission)
- any text written in the assignment text box
- any uploaded files*
- any comments included with students' uploads
- instructor comments
- When you are ready to grade, click 'Grade' to the right of the desired student.
*Please note, instead of uploading files, some students may choose to type or copy and paste their submissions directly into the assignment text box. In this case, a brief excerpt of their submission will appear under 'Online text' in the submissions table. This excerpt can be expanded by clicking on the magnifying glass icon above the text. Additionally, depending on the type of written assignment, students' submissions may appear in the 'Submission comments' column.
